Clockwork Claw: A Steampunk Nerf Mod

Description

Despite the fact that I more or less dress like a steampunk roleplayer most days of the week, I've never been hugely into the movement. I like the aesthetics, and I've read through Girl Genius from time to time, but I usually stop short of top hats, sprocket earrings and leather bodices. Waistcoats and bracers are more or less an everyday thing, though, if only because the extra pockets are bloody useful in the workshop, and the neckscarves keep the sawdust out. Aprons, of course, go without saying. Even so, I don't often actually make fantastical steampunky-pieces. In fact, the only ones I think I've done so far have been some other nerf mods.

Still, this was a lot of fun. The gun was done for my younger brother for use during campus Humans vs. Zombies matches using components from a Hail-fire, a Retaliator and a heavy sprinkling of trip-to-the-hardware-store (including untold amounts of 2 tom epoxy and plastic weld). I really wanted to do the chainsaw bayonet attachment, but the Wheaton HvZ rules encourage extremely quick matches and often take place at least partly after sundown, so I thought that a flashlight was definitely in order as well, and it is a quite nice flashlight as that. I took it out for a spin at midnight last night, and it was definitely doing it's job. Given the basic uselessness of the chainsaw other than for looking cool and making a horrible screeching sound when activated, I mounted both components on rail-mounts so that the flashlight can be attached to the barrel rather than the body of the weapon for better in-game function. The extraneous tubing, bubbler soaker, and disembodied flicker swich serve no function whatsoever except to look as steampunkish as possible. I even have small bottles of green and pink gel in the workshop to add to the look, but the gun was already getting a little cluttered, so I abstained.

The saw features a very badly painted polar bear with a clockwork arm; polar bear being a nickname/sigil of my little brother who is 6'4", absurdly in shape, and white as a cauliflower after cleaning the blackboard erasers. Besides the standard ones shown in the picture, I've done up a set of extended mags that should make the ammo capacity of this gun a whopping 144 darts, but the short ones looked better for photos.

Watch this piece come together in the offsite work in progress gallery or see more finished pictures in an expanded gallery.

Nerf belongs to Hasbro.

You'd make a good Imperial in the LARP I go to.
