Yes, this walnut wood Derpy was definitely
made while re^7 listening to "Going Postal" by Terry Pratchett*, Terry Pratchett audiobooks being a major feature of my life when I spend hours at a time with earphones in to block out the sound of power tools. One of his better works in my opinion.
Working with Derpys is always fun, and I'm glad to get to do another one as my 100th pony. Taking the last poll into account, and finding myself completely out of onyx and thin gold wiring, I opted instead to leave the paint off and stick with engraving the eyes, which, I must say, I did rather badly. Certainly the right eye is very goofy looking. The left one is all right. Tried making more ear-like ears, but they still came out pretty stiff and looking like they are fused to the top of her head. So far the only ears I've really done well have been on the upcoming Vinyl Scratch (uploading Friday, I believe.) I also would have liked to do the wings differently. When I first designed her I intended her to be speeding over some clouds or something, carrying a mailbag. Later, when I decided to make it an actual delivery, I had already cut the wings out and drilled the insert-holes to be laid back and fast looking. Had I planned better, I would have flared them out more for a more "hovering" look. But the letterbox was a lot of fun (read, "a dire pain") to make, and a fun challenge to find a good way to make her look like she's flying. I hope the tail covers the stand sufficiently.
Still she's not too shabby, especially for a mini figure. Like Chrysalis and Luna (tomorrows upload) I used an undersized block for this, especially for a stretched out pose like this, and so she's done to about a 3/4 scale of my normal ponies. Everything in this piece is walnut except for the mailbox flag, which is bloodwood, and the prop that holds her up, which is bamboo. EDIT Whoops, I tell a lie! The envelopes are made of holly wood.
