Derpy Hooves Woodwork: Post Haste by xofox Derpy Hooves Woodwork: Post Haste by xofox
Yes, this walnut wood Derpy was definitely made while re^7 listening to "Going Postal" by Terry Pratchett*, Terry Pratchett audiobooks being a major feature of my life when I spend hours at a time with earphones in to block out the sound of power tools. One of his better works in my opinion.
Working with Derpys is always fun, and I'm glad to get to do another one as my 100th pony. Taking the last poll into account, and finding myself completely out of onyx and thin gold wiring, I opted instead to leave the paint off and stick with engraving the eyes, which, I must say, I did rather badly. Certainly the right eye is very goofy looking. The left one is all right. Tried making more ear-like ears, but they still came out pretty stiff and looking like they are fused to the top of her head. So far the only ears I've really done well have been on the upcoming Vinyl Scratch (uploading Friday, I believe.) I also would have liked to do the wings differently. When I first designed her I intended her to be speeding over some clouds or something, carrying a mailbag. Later, when I decided to make it an actual delivery, I had already cut the wings out and drilled the insert-holes to be laid back and fast looking. Had I planned better, I would have flared them out more for a more "hovering" look. But the letterbox was a lot of fun (read, "a dire pain") to make, and a fun challenge to find a good way to make her look like she's flying. I hope the tail covers the stand sufficiently.
Still she's not too shabby, especially for a mini figure. Like Chrysalis and Luna (tomorrows upload) I used an undersized block for this, especially for a stretched out pose like this, and so she's done to about a 3/4 scale of my normal ponies. Everything in this piece is walnut except for the mailbox flag, which is bloodwood, and the prop that holds her up, which is bamboo. EDIT Whoops, I tell a lie! The envelopes are made of holly wood.

Derpy Hooves and My Little Pony belong to Hasbro.

*Lest accusations of plagiarism arise let me say 1)Yes I know "Post Haste" is the title of one of the chapters, and 2) That's not where this title came from, but was instead suggested to me by my little sister.

Best Derpy out of wood I've ever seen, well technically it's the only wooden Derpy I've seen, but she's still great.

it's really lovely...
and yes, the hair covers the
stand quite sufficiently.

as for Terry Pratchet's better works,
my favourite is definitely "Making Money",
which introduced me to the series in
the first place ^^
(and I love my Mom's singaporean friend for giving it to me)

I somehow started at the beginning with Colour of Magic, Light Fantastic, and Equal Rites read all in a row. All three are some of his worst works in my opinion, so I'm glad I hung in there and switched to the City Watch series! :D

Addendum. Although I still feel that his early works do not even come close to comparing, they are still fun to go back and reread for the sake of comparison after reading his later stuff. And they're still somewhat entertaining :D

So, to be honest, I'm not really a my little pony fan. But, this is extremely good. you don't need to be a fan to see the quality of your work.

Well. I must concede that no, I have not. Only 98 as of today. But the wood for #99 is clamped and laminating right now and the sketches for 100 are already drawn. :)
