Well here it is, the actual lectern that the books will rest on in the bookstand. I've uploaded it now, without the bookrest because I wanted to show the whole map before a carve a slice out of it (although I think I can place it in such a way that it just clips some of the islands, Klatch and maybe a bit of Howondaland. The closeups underneath are, from left to right, the coast of Nothingfjord since it has some nice coastling, the circle sea area, and some of the islands since they were fun and a pain to do. I've deliberately left out Leshp and the lost continent of Ku because this is not a map, but part of a larger Discworld sculpture and I wanted it to reflect what the disc would actually look like from above (and again, why I decided not to label the places.) at a normal time, and those locations are not usually visible. I'm afraid I got some imperfections trapped in the lacquer, which is always a risk when you're doing it in a woodshop, even with ail filtration grabbing most of the sawdust. Still, on the whole I think it came out all right and I'll take it as a good start to the project. The disc, like the rest of this project is done in walnut.
You can see the work in progress on this piece here.
I sure hope so; the progress of Jerakeen, the first elephant, seems to indicate that it's going to be one heck of a time sucker though. I suppose the better experiences in life are, though.
Haha I suppose so. Elephants are pretty awesome to boot. Do you think you'll want to show it to Mr. Pratchett when it's done? I've come across sculptures, cakes, knit plushies even but never a bookstand.
My rather cheeky plan at the moment is actually to send him one of Atuins flippers when I get to that stage and ask him to sign it before its attached. (but yes I would also love to go to NADWCon this year and take some photos at least.)
Ooh, I hope he will! I just checked out NADWCon and man, it seems expensive but looks so fun. They have an art show as well! If you go perhaps you could enter it and perhaps include some other works as well?
Was it expensive? Phooey. All I had checked on was the date and location and whether or not Pratchett was showing up. Maybe I could sell some Pratchetty stuff and amortize the cost.
Seems like you need to be a member to attend, there isn't a pass registration like other cons. An adult membership is $111!
From what I saw of the art show at least half of the items you bring need to be available for bid and also pre-approved... I guess so nothing really inappropriate is brought in? Can be in progress shots though.
