Luna in Ebony II by xofox Luna in Ebony II by xofox
(EDIT and aside: How bout 'dem transits of Venus? Celestia's power weakens daily....)

Ok guys. I really do not like this piece. Yes, yes I know, inb4 how wunderbar, she's fabulous, etc. etc. I'm not fishing for support, I just know that, although I'm fairly critical of my own work, I can make things that do deserve, if not support, then a nodding appreciation of a job done to my standards. And this piece, in my opinion, is not among them. My major problems are the shape of her head, which is a different shape from most ponies' and which this doesn't even resemble, and her hair. In making the tiara, I decided to drop bores for the hair too far forward, meaning that half her face is permanently covered by hair. Now, I'll grant you that, due to the wood drying in my Texas workshop too quickly, there was an enormous fault on that side of her face, but you should still have been able to see it.
Hrumph. Oh well, at least 1) I like how her wings turned out. 2) I silverleafed her cutie mark instead of painting it white, and I like the effect, and 3) It's made me cautious about the new Luna I'm making for the raffle, and caution is good. 4) I used the old Luna hair, and I like it. I'm sticking to it!
(A quick aside, I'm raffling off seven wooden ponies for free. Leave a comment in my journal to be entered for a chance to win!)

Feel like seeing more of Luna? She has a Work in Progress Gallery and an expanded gallery over at My Little Woodcraft.

Princess Luna and My Little Pony belong to Hasbro.

I really like the way the wings turned out on this one. What tools do you use to carve ponies?

I do the silhouette cutting with a scroll saw and most of the shaping with a rotary tool
A bit of knife and gougework, but mostly power tools. :D

I think she looks really good, but there is always room for improvement. She reminds me of season one Luna, who was a lot shorter. If that's what you were going for, then woohoo. I'd love to see a luna in more of a season two style, where she's tall and more spindly like Celestia. I love her wings and I adore the way you did her cutie mark. I think that looks fantastic. Maybe some of the silver leaf on her shoes would look good, too. I have no doubt that you can make a wonderful Luna. Hope my comments may have helped. ^.^

Oh, silver leaf on the shoes could be pretty nice! Though the chest piece might look a bit off being left uncoloured. If there are leaves of other shades that could help, or something speckled glimmering nature.

I like her well enough that I came back to look at her again. :p
