Untitled Nature II

Ah. This photo has such a fun story to go with it. Trust me, it's worth reading; it'll make the photo even more fun:

So this was taken up to my chest (not kidding) in a swamp. And when I say swamp I mean that I was shin deep in quicksand at this point (still not kidding). And when I say quicksand I mean that I was sinking at about an inch every two minutes (really. I'm not even kidding about this). Because the buddy system is for smart people, which I am not, I was about to die alone in a swamp at sunset, and there was this beautiful little bug scuttling along the underside of this reed, totally unconcerned with the fact that I was in some deep schist (a geology joke for you guys). So I grabbed a photo of this guy with the black water beneath him and the green grass and lily pads around him because, I dunno, you think you're on top of the food chain one minute, the next you're about to die and even the bugs aren't worried over you.

In the end I threw my camera into a tree where, thank goodness) the strap tangled in some branches. Then I slogged forward and managed to dive out and catch a tree branch when I had sunk about up to my collarbones and pull myself to slightly firmer ground. Anyway, this is one of the three or four times in my life when I really, really thought that I was about to die. I'm glad I got a pic of it.
