Fluttershy in Her Gala Gown: Woodwork

Description

At the gala, in the garden...

Whew! I do believe that I work harder and harder on these as time goes on. Fortunately, I've been getting faster as I get more used to my material, but this one still clocked in at over twenty-two hours of solid work. I worked on her from noon yesterday until 4:30 this morning, and that was only the shaping and wings; never you mind the designing, the actual cutting of the silhouette, or the maning.

Certainly this is the most out-of-the-ordinary, and the most ridiculously elaborate pony I've done yet, with no end of intricate little details to be embossed onto her. Those shoes and that neck-fastening took an inordinate amount of work to carve. But the good news is I'm pretty happy with her, although I'd like to try her face, especially her ears, again. I also think, in retrospect, that I would have liked to have her wings folded and part of the body, rather than outstretched. I know it's my standard, approach, but folded wings just seem to fit Fluttershy so much better (like the one raised leg that seems to have been built into my mindset when designing Fluttershies). Also, I will burst into tears at the first person to remind me that I put the butterfly on the wrong ear.

Still, I'm still liking the paintless look, and yellowheart is a nice wood to look at, which is good, because I can't paint worth a bit. And although it was a very fun experiment I'm looking forward to doing some simpler pieces next. Alas, the simpler designs are going to be done in ebony, which should make it average out to about the same difficulty. :|
But ponies await, so on, on, hurrah!

If you like this piece, I encourage you to check out her detailed work in progress gallery and the expanded gallery of the finished piece over at My Little Woodcraft.

Fluttershy is a yellowheart piece for :iconfundz64: a great guy. Go swing by his page.

Fluttershy and My Little Pony belong to Hasbro.

ahha!!! you set up a critique-JUST FOR ME! .. i feel special! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/t/t…" width="31" height="17" alt=":typerhappy:" title="OMG MOAR POEMS!"/>

When you get your requests/commissions and ideas for new sculptures, it is quite the task to make them seem special in every way possible. In certain cases, it would be just out of pure luck of mixing up a few traits- but what differs that from you is that even in your first sculptures, you could SEE the effort and caring you put into those three-four inch wooden sculptures, in fact, you can STILL see the passion and dedication in your work and that is quite the talent in one is capable of being humble and letting their 'Oeuvre-d'art' speak for themselves!

Originality, since when is ANY of your pony sculptures UN-original? We can see the new differences and concept you try to imply into the ponies you make! This should be the prime reason of your constant originality!... and I'm not saying this because this sculpture was dedicated to my girlfriend. Put up a critique for any other of your work- pony or not- and I am convinced they will put the similar fact of how bold and 'attracting to the eye' it is!

One trait that really gets me is the open wings. Even when you mention you felt a bit off on the results-which is probably your humble-ness speaking- I actually find it a higher notch for you to obtain for your next sculpture!

Overall, Your work continues to astound me... me and 1,259 deviants would say the same! (your view-count as of now <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w…" width="15" height="15" alt=";)" title=";) (Wink)"/> ) It's never a dull moment when you upload your artworks! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c…" width="20" height="20" alt="" title="Clap"/>
